Fenton Blue Carnival Glass Fernery
Curatorial Story & Cultural Heritage
This is an antique Fenton blue carnival glass footed fernery bowl. Carnival glass was first introduced in the early 20th century as an affordable alternative to luxury iridescent art glass produced by Tiffany and Loetz. Pressed glass pieces were treated with metallic salts while still hot to impart a shimmering, oil-slick sheen that caught the light in various colors. American glassmakers such as Fenton, Northwood, and Imperial mass-produced these decorative household items for middle-class homes. Fenton Art Glass Company, founded by brothers Frank and John Fenton in 1905, became one of the most prolific producers of this lustrous ware. The grape and vine motifs reflected the prevailing Arts and Crafts aesthetic that favored natural, botanical themes in everyday decorative objects. Today, these vibrant iridescent pieces are cherished by collectors who appreciate their historical significance and the technical mastery of early American glass pressing. Period: Circa 1908-1920 Origin: United States
